Glynneath and District Historical Society
Glynneath & District Historical Society (the Society) was founded in 1974, as an idea to respond to the then "Year of the Valleys" initiative. The first Society Chairman was Mr Henry Jenkins, Secretary Mrs Mary Foster Thomas and Treasurer Miss Susan Davies. Rather remarkably Susan Davies is still Society Treasurer having given over 30 years sterling service.
The Society encourages and promotes participation in historical activities. In particular a programme of meetings is organised with speakers sharing their knowledge, memories and experiences on a wide range of topics for members' enjoyment. The meetings are quite informal and speakers often show slides. Members meet at the Senior Citizens Hall at Whitting Street, Glynneath at 7.00pm on the first Thursday evening of each month from September through to May. The Society AGM is always held on the first Thursday in May.
The annual membership subscription is just £5.00. Non members are welcome to attend any meeting but are asked to pay an admission charge of £1.00 per person per meeting. The Society currently has in the region of 40 members.
A committee of 6 members manages the Society. These are
| Mr Keith Edwards (Chairman) |
Mrs Gwynneth Edwards |
| Mrs Susan Davies (Treasurer) |
Mr Mervyn Jones |
| Mr Graham Morris (Secretary) |
Mrs Menna Walters |
The Society 's President is Mrs Susan Davies, who is also Society Treasurer.
Other initiatives and developments are planned by the Society and include establishing a slide archive from old photographs of Glynneath and the local area. The Society would very much appreciate the loan of any old photographs or postcards for consideration of copying and inclusion in the slide archive. This material will eventually be made available to other local organisations and schools for educational and social purposes. Any person who can help with the loan of old photographs or postcards relating to Glynneath and district is asked to contact the Society Secretary.
Anyone is welcome to come along to any meeting as a non member or to join the Society as a member. Glynneath & District Historical Society is a progressive voluntary organisation with a committee working hard to secure future developments. If you wish to be part of this please join us. A warm welcome awaits!
Further information is freely available from any of the Society's officers.
