Some Recent Projects

CUV Banner Project - The youth group worked with the Community University of the Valleys (CUV) and South Wales Miners' Library to produce a banner that would become the emblem of the club. It was decided to use a banner designed by the children and Rubin Eynon, the local artist, to help the children understand more about the suffering of the miners during the strike in 1984. The project coincided with the tenth anniversary of the CUV and the banner was unveiled at the celebration dinner. The project was highlighted by S4C, some of the children being interviewed. As a reward for their hard work, the children were invited to the dinner and were presented with certificates and photographs.

Smoking Sensations - The idea of this project was to make the children more aware of the damage that can be done to health by smoking. It set out to show the children that there was a support network out there to help young people give up.

Anti-smoking Poster Campaign - This was a follow-on to the Smoking Sensations project, and the idea was to use shock treatment by the use of pictures. The children have worked with a youth worker in producing the photographs, doing make-up, setting up props and using IT to produce the images. It is hoped in the future to get permission to show these in the National Assembly for Wales and that there will be press interest.

Healthy Eating Project - This is an idea run in conjunction with the County youth services. The idea is to try and get the children to come up with innovative ways of producing healthy foods to eat during the youth evening. To this end, five of the youth members have worked with the Centre staff to establish a healthy eating cafˇ to provide youth club members with good nutritional and affordable food during the youth evenings.

Notice Board - The board was produced by the children to advertise forthcoming events and to recognise the achievements of fellow youth members. During this process the children learned about Health and Safety, carpentry, use of power tools, wall-papering and teamwork.
